PTi Introduces High Capacity Sheet Line for Shower and Bath Enclosures

Aurora IL – PTi has recently completed a TRIDENT® Series Co-Extrusion Sheet Line designed to run either two or three layer Polystyrene Sheet for shower enclosures. This versatile line allows for decorative modification of the sheet by adding a hot melt laminated film when required for special surface enhancing effects. In addition, protective sheet lamination can be added in-line to the top and bottom of the sheet as required. Sheet thickness ranges from 0.040” to 0.350”.

Capable of producing 5000 lbs/hr, the system features a TRIDENT® water-cooled 7" 32/1 main extruder with 700HP AC motor and drive and a TRIDENT® water-cooled 4.5" 32/1 co extruder with 300HP AC motor and drive. Both extruders come fully equipped with a hydraulic slide plate screen changer, gear pump, static mixer and vacuum vent system. The extruder tandem feeds a 3-layer co-extrusion A-B-A feedblock and an integrally mounted sheet die with a width of 108” and a maximum lip opening of 0.400”.

The system is equipped with a PTi REVOLUTION® vertical upstack sheet take-off system incorporating 36" diameter rolls with a 120” face width. Rolls are individually driven and employ hydraulic linear roll actuation. Precise die and nip alignment are provided through motorized roll gap and nip height adjustment.

A unique feature of REVOLUTION® is the operator’s ability to change rolls quickly. Typically this is accomplished in less than an hour. This allows the user to change rolls to produce either embossed patterns or mirror-polished sheet with minimum interference to production time.

Other components of the sheet take-off system include a mezzanine mounted dual-position laminating unwind unit for the hot melt laminated film process, two masking unwind stations (top and bottom) which add the protective film to the finished sheet, and a telescoping sheet conveyor with custom 15 foot access catwalks on both sides. The telescoping conveyor allows downstream components (i.e. shears and winders) to remain fixed while the roll stack can travel fore and aft for maintenance and cleaning purposes.

Also provided are razor edge trim slitting units, an edge trim recovery system and an inline shear system with 120” width capacity.

Handling the controls is PTI’s newly designed TITAN® Integrated PLC Control System. Based on the ControLogix™ PLC Platform, the TITAN® coordinates all motors, PID temperature and pressure loops and safety interlocks. The TITAN® System is housed in a newly designed ergonomic console, and features a Panelview Plus™ 15” color touch screen interface and a video monitor for VideoGap™, which provides remote real-time viewing of the sheet die lip and chrome roll nip point regions.
